Collection tank alongside the recycling plant

Waste oil collections

Based in Wales this company is a division of a well known parent company in USA trading in oil recycling. The market in USA was buoyant but the UK market was in decline as major customers in power generation concerned about global warming, EEC directivesand public opinion were moving towards cleaner fuels.

In addition to the day to day management of a tanker fleet and drivers I needed to diversify and optimise fleet utilisation to fill the gaps left by reducing sales.

The transport issues were second nature to me, reducing costs in fleet hire, tank renewals and fleet maintenance all came naturally. The retention of existing custom through improved service levels and competitive pricing was achieved by the effort put in by the sales, operations and transport team. Ultimately new customers for waste oil fuels were limited due to market changes and environmental legislation. Improvement in fact our very existance had to come from diversification and the streamlining of the transport function. Waste oil collection agents paid by the load were used to collect waste into regional storage facilities and internal (larger) fleet was used to trunk that waste to and from the refining plants and for making deliveries to customers.

The release of the smaller collection vehicles by outsourcing that function would servenew business in domestic fuels to produce additional revenue.
